Test & GPA Requirements

Graduate Writing Assessment Requirement

students in computer lab

All CSULB students must complete the Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement (GWAR). The most common way to fulfill the GWAR is to take the GWAR Proficiency Exam (GPE). Students must attempt the GPE before they earn 50 units, and transfer students/graduate students must attempt it in their first semester of attendance. Otherwise, a registration hold will be placed on your record. You can sign up for the GPE through Testing and Evaluation Services.

If you are not successful on your first attempt of the GPE, you have the option of taking a GWAR course. The GWAR website details approved courses and resources to help you successfully meet the GWAR.

GPA Requirements

There are three GPAs that are used by CSULB to evaluate your academic progress. In addition to overall GPA requirements, a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.00 in all major courses is required for graduation.

    • Overall GPA – includes all coursework including transferable courses from other institutions.
    • CSULB GPA – includes all coursework completed at CSULB, does not include transferable coursework from other institutions.
    • Major Cumulative GPA – includes all coursework for the major including transferable coursework from other institutions.
