What is a Peer Mentor?
The Learning Alliance Peer Mentor Program seeks upper-division students who will guide entering freshmen by sharing their knowledge, encouraging student success, and providing new students with continuing support. As a peer mentor, students have the opportunity to improve leadership skills, facilitate discussions, help create a successful learning environment, and develop expertise in group dynamics and effective communication.
Peer mentors are assigned to each CLA 195 – Introduction to Learning Communities course along with a faculty and professional staff member. CLA 195 meets twice each week during the fall semester. In addition, peer mentors must enroll in and attend a seminar once a week.
What’s the time commitment?
Your time commitment as a peer mentor will require an average of five to six hours per week as follows:
- Enrollment in and attendance at the Peer Mentor three-unit seminar
- Weekly team planning sessions to develop and coordinate effective peer mentor lesson plans
- Attendance and participation in assigned CLA 195 course
- Occasional events and activities planned in collaboration with Alliance Peer Mentors, Staff, and Faculty
- This is a great personal and professional experience.you won’t want to miss out!
