PAUL B. STURTEVANT

Paul B. Sturtevant is a medievalist, a public historian, and a digital historian. He is founder and editor-in-chief of The Public Medievalist, an online magazine dedicated to presenting exciting medieval histories to a broad audience in a way that is accessible, meaningful, and (most important), free. The publication has become particularly well known for its special series on Race, Racism, and the Middle Ages (started in 2017), as well as Gender, Sexism and the Middle Ages (started in 2018). Paul is also host of The Public Medievalist’s new podcast, The Public Medievalcast. Paul’s first book, The Middle Ages in Popular Imagination: Memory, Film, and Medievalism presents a handy how-to guide for those wanting to truly understand how the non-academic public learns about and uses the Middle Ages. Its paperback edition will be released in August 2019. He is completing a second book with Amy Kaufman, provisionally titled Misusing the Middle Ages, focusing on the ways in which people past and present have used the Middle Ages to justify hatred and prejudice. Aside from over 50 articles at The Public Medievalist, Paul also has been published in The Washington Post, The Daily Telegraph, Perspectives on History, and Medieval Warfare Magazine.
