The first encounters between Pilgrims and Indians were friendly ones. Samoset, a sachem of the Pemaquid (Mohegan) tribe, greeted the Pilgrims in English (which he had learned from contact with traders) and became an instrumental liaison between the new settlers and the Indians. Samoset signed the first land deed in America, ceding close to twelve thousand acres to the new arrivals. Also helpful was Squanto, who returned to North America in 1619 after being sold into slavery in Spain. Squanto helped negotiate the first peace treaty, with Wampanoag chief Massasoit in 1621.
