This portrait Minnetaree warrior and Dog Dancer Pehriska-Ruhpa, made by premier western artist Carl Bodmer, was painted in March 1834. The Minetarees, who lived along the Missouri River, had been extremely cooperative with Bodmer during his extensive tra vels in the area, and this portrait is considered one of Bodmer's best works. The Dog Society prided itself on its fierce appearance. The headdress is of owl, raven, and magpie feathers, and the rattle in Pehriska-Ruhpa's right hand is strung with animal hooves and an eagle feather pendant at the end.
