Some had a religious function, like the Tobacco Society of the Crow tribe, which grew the t obacco used in ritual ceremonies. Other societies, like the famous Kit-Fox Society and the "Dog Soldiers," were made up of warriors. The lithograph probably depicts the ritual dance of a "Bear Society" in an unidentified Plains tribe.
