Billy Bowlegs was the leader of the last group of Seminole Indians to remain in Florida against the will of the United States authorities. The exact date of his birth is unknown, but is though he was born around 1810. Billy was a superior warrior who re sisted efforts to remove his tribe to the Indian reservations. After many battles he finally made peace with the U.S. army on August 14, 1842. He died of small pox sometime between 1859 and 1864 and was buried in the National Cemetery at Fort Gibbons.
