The Pima Indians lived along the Gila River in Arizona. They were farmers who often harassed and robbed by the Apaches. The Pimas were also gifted warrior who could fight on horseback or on foot, and they used every device of desert warfare to defend th eir territory. In this painting, two warriors indicate a successful venture with a smoke signal; the village answers with two columns of smoke. In 1857, the Yuma Indians, with help from the Apache and the Mojave tribes, attempted a sneak attack on a Mar icopa village. The Pimas had been alerted and came to the aid of the Maricopas, and hundreds of Yuma Indians were killed. It was the last major intertribal war of the 19th century in that area.
