Born in 1818, Manuelito was an important war leader for the Navajos. In 1863, he led his tribe in the fight against General James Carleton, who was sent to remove the Navajos from their native territories. Resisting the resettlement, Manuelito and his warriors fought Carleton until they were forced to surrender in 1865. Manuelito and his people were moved to Bosque Redondo, on the Pecos River in the Territory of New Mexico, where disease and famine came close to devastating the tribe. The Americans allowed the Navajos to return to their native territories, and finally acknowledged their failure to contain the tribe. Manuelito served as head chief from 1870 to 1884. He died in 1894 at the age of seventy-five.
