Satanta (c.1820-78), also known as Settainte, was a Kiowa chief. His name means White Bear, and he was admired and respected by his tribe. In 1867, Satanta signed the Medicine Lodge Treaty, agreeing to keep the Kiowas within a reservation. Satanta eventually stopped cooperating with the whites, however, and in 1871 was charged with raiding a wagon train and killing several men. He was initially sentenced to be hanged, but the sentence was changed to life imprisonment. Eventually, Satanta was released on parole, but was arrested again in 1874 on a similar charge and sent to the Huntsville, Texas prison. He committed suicide in 1878.
