Captain Jack (c.1838-73) was a Modoc leader. His Modoc name was Kintpuash, referring to the medals and military paraphernalia he wore, When the whites tried to resettle his people onto reservations in 1872, Captain Jack led 250 Modocs to the lava caves near Tule Lake in California. They maintained their position there for five months, and after much bloodshed, Captain Jack agreed to sign a peace treaty. Captain Jack in not trust the U.S. Army leaders, however, and in a sudden outburst during the negotiations he shot and killed General E.R.S Canby. After that, Captain Jack escaped and retreated with his people into the lava caves. Eventually, the Modocs were driven from their fortress and Captain Jack was hanged.
