Shown here is one in a series of auto biographical pictograms by the great Sioux leader Sitting Bull. The buffalo seated in the upper right-hand corner identifies the artist. Sitting Bull is depicted on the horse. The long black object hanging from his hand represents the scalp of the dead Crow Indian lying at left. Using his spear, he is about to kill the second Crow, who misses shooting him and loses his rifle. Plains Indians used these drawings both to record actual events and to illustrate a warrior's qualities of bravery and prowess.
