The Sioux leader Gall was born near the Moreau River in South Dakota, around 1840. Known also as Pizi, he earned the name Gall when he ate the gall bladder of an animal for nourishment. He took part in the many battles of Red Cloud's War (18866-1868). Skilled as a warrior, Gall became Sitting Bull's chief lieutenant. He took a leading role in the Battle of Little Bighorn on June 25, 1876, which wiped out General George Custer and his entire unit. Gall retreated to Canada with Sitting Bull, but return ed to the United States in 1880 and surrendered. He was then moved to Standing Rock Reservation in the Dakota Territory, where he stressed the importance of education for Indians. Gall became a judge of the Court of Indian Offenses (1889) and later served as an Indian envoy to Washington, D.C. He died in 1894.
