During the 1860's and 1870's, the Cheyenne allied themselves with the Sioux, their traditional friends, against the U.S. army. After Custer's defeat at Little Bighorn, General Crook and his forces pursued the scattering Sioux and Cheyenne forces with determination. On November 25, 1876, Crook's command defeated the Cheyenne band led by Dull Knife, a follower of Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse, in the Bighorn Mountains of Wyoming. Pictured above are prisoners from Dull Knife's band on the steps of the court house in Dodge City, two years later. By that time, Sitting Bull had been brought under control, and Dull Knife was no longer a threat to the U.S. forces.
