Geronimo (c.1829-1909), born in No-doyohn Canyon, Arizona, was leader of a band of Chiricahua Apaches. After his mother, wife, and children were killed by Mexicans in 1858, he rose to fame leading many successful raids against the Mexicans. Hostilities between the Americans and the Apaches began in the 1860's, and in 1872 General George Crook was called in to place the Apaches on reservations. Geronimo managed to escape and fled to Mexico in 1876.
