The Crow Indians were a warlike, nomadic tribe who lived on the plains near the Yellowstone River in Wyoming and Montana. In 1876, they fought against the Sioux in this region in an alliance with the eastern Shoshones under General George Crook. Crow chief Plenty Coups encouraged his warriors to side with the white army, assuring them that once the wars were over, they would be rewarded for their assistance. However, the Crows were treated no differently than the resisting tribes, and as more and more forts were built in their territory, despite their resistance, they were forced to cede large portions of their land. This photograph of Crow prisoners was taken in 1887; by 1888, all conflicts were resolved and the Crow were settled on their reservation in northern Montana.
