Vine Deloria, Jr., a Sioux Indian, was born in Martin, South Dakota, in 1933. He is a professor of political science at the University of Arizona at Tucson. Mr. Deloria is also a well-known speaker, author, political analyst, and recently appointed trustee of the new National Museum of the American Indian. He has written many books and studies on Native Americans, among them Custer Died for Your Sins, The Nations Within, and American Indians, American Justice, with Clifford Lytle. He is pictured above speaking at the Martin Luther King, Jr., Holiday Celebration held at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., 1990. Quoting King's desire to be judged by the content of his character rather than the color of his skin. Deloria also asked that Indians be valued not for the artifacts white Americans find so interesting but for the content of their spirit.
