How to Become a Peer Mentor

How can I become a Peer Mentor for the COMM Tutoring Center?

For individuals interested in serving as a Peer Mentor for the COMM Tutoring Center in an upcoming semester, please complete the Tutoring Center Application and submit it by the deadline noted on the application.

How are Peer Mentors selected?

Peer Mentors are chosen based on:
1. Strong overall GPA in the Major
2. Eligibility (i.e., students must be COMM majors and must have completed COMM 200 as well as at least 3 of the core COMM classes with a B or better),
3. Recommendations from faculty,
4. Breadth of course coverage represented on the team
5. Motivation/goals of service

Once chosen as a Peer Mentor, what happens next?

Selected individuals are invited to enroll in the designated upper division (400-level) course. Please be sure to speak with a COMM Undergraduate Advisor to ensure how this course will fit in your program of study in preparation for graduation. 

Why should I consider applying to be a Peer Mentor?

Peer Mentors overwhelmingly find the experience to be a positive one. They have a flexible schedule while earning units for their service. They get to apply the communication skills that are covered in our classes to real-life situations. They make important contributions to our department as a meaningful way to give back and to inspire other students. It is a great resume builder and a wonderful opportunity to network with fellow COMM students (as well as faculty members). I encourage you to visit the center to speak with current Peer Mentors to learn more about their first-hand experiences and perceptions about this type of service learning opportunity.
