Gateway Cities Census Data
Description: The area known as Maywood was formerly called Laguna-Bell Acres and was used as agricultural land for truck farming at the beginning of the 20th century. The name “Maywood” came later in 1919 when a planned community of industrial and residential use was developed. The name was selected by the residents themselves at the urging of the Laguna Land & Water Co. They based it on the name of a popular employee of the land corporation named May Wood. Maywood was incorporated in 1924. Today, the city prides itself on its ability to retain its small town atmosphere while being surrounded by a massive metropolis. The city’s economy is thriving with a good mix of retail and manufacturing.
Services include a comprehensive senior citizen program, a graffiti abatement program and a dial-a-ride program. The city also sponsors a Maywood Scholarship Program encouraging students to pursue higher education so they can “empower their community and create better citizens of the future.” The city sponsors an annual youth fund golf tournament, and an annual Fourth of July fireworks celebration and parade.
