Background and Research Interests

Judith Tyner taught at CSULB for over 35 years. The courses she taught were Map Reading and Interpretation, Beginning Cartography, Advanced Cartography, Computer Cartography, Remote Sensing, Maps and Civilization, Literature and Methods, Seminar in Cartography and GIS, Geography of the United States and Canada, and Geography of California. She served as department chair for six years, founded the Cartography/GIS Certificate Program and served as its director for 20 years. She continues to do research and write on cartography.

Her research interests include: map design, history of cartography, women in cartography, map samplers, textile maps, persuasive cartography, and lunar cartography.

Recent Work

Dr. Tyner has recently published two new books and presented at several conferences. Her book “The World of Maps: Map Reading and Interpretation for the 21st Century” was published in October 2014 by Guilford Press and her latest book “Stitching the World: Embroidered Maps and Women’s Geographical Education” was published in April 2015 by Ashgate Publishing. She has given a presentation titled “The Tip of the Iceberg, Marie Tharp and Women Cartographers of the Twentieth Century” to the Phillip Lee Philips Society of the Library of Congress in May 2014, to ESRI/ University of Redlands in June 2014, and to the Society of Women Geographers Conference “Women Mapping the World” at the Library of Congress on March 27, 2015. She also recently presented a paper “Geography in Silk and Wool: Embroidered Maps and Globes” to the Embroiderer’s Guild of America conference at the Winterthur Museum in Delaware October 24 and 25, 2014.
