Back in Long Beach

July 2, 2012
Today everyone was a little tired from a full day of traveling back to Long Beach. We met at the GIS lab to continue our projects and research. For the whole day I worked on creating shapefiles from eCognition segmentations from the UAV imagery to create a species level shapefile. Now that I […]

Final Day in Kauai

June 30th
Today we packed our bags and equipment for our departure tomorrow. Around noon we headed to the beach for a BBQ and fun in the sun.
I really enjoyed doing research on Kauai and do hope to return soon to do more.
Tomorrow we head back to Long Beach for a week to do data analysis.

June 29, 2012
This was our last day in the field. We loaded into the vans one last time and headed towards our study site. Our goal for today was to take any last minute data for our analysis next week in Long Beach. We walked along the cliffs taking several points of native vegetation. This […]

Today we spent the whole day in the lab. I started some of my analysis on the spectral band analysis, I am using eCognition to do the analysis, which I am getting help from Briton. My group and I also prepared for a group presentation. All groups had to present what research they […]

Today I went in the field with Jake to take more spectral signature of native and invasive plants around the gird. We continued inside the grid sampling native species. After around 4 samples, I wanted to take a couple spectral signatures of invasive plants. We sampled Halle Koa, which is the dominate alien […]

June 26, 2012
This morning I went to the grid with Jake to take spectral readings of native plant species. I learned how to set up, calibrate, and take the spectral reading of plants. I found native plants that were bigger so I can pick them out easier in the high resolution imagery. Today we sampled […]

The research is underway on Kauai. Today was a lab day. We processed data we generated from GPS and Trimbles, inserted them into ArcGIS and played around with them. We also discussed our individual projects. I am going to look at species level spectral signatures. I am going to compare the spectral signatures […]

We woke up at 4:20 today to head to a nearby harbor. After loading up two zodiac boats full of gear and people we took off as the sun was rising. We rode along the coast watching all of the cliffs pass us. Our destination, Nu’alolo Kai. This state park is a beautiful […]

Waimea Canyon

June 23, 2012
Today we went to Waimea canyon. It was an amazing site to see with very lush vegetation. We got to see different types of native highland species. The canyon is very diverse and has many different types of species. Once we make a model of our study site, the canyon is a potential […]
