JPR Scholarships

The Department of Journalism & Public Relations awards at least 10 scholarships annually, ranging from $250 to $5,000. Journalism and public relations majors and minors can apply for the scholarships described below between November 1, 2022 and February 15, 2023 through Beach Scholarships.  Scholarship winners are announced at Journalism & Public Relations Day each April.

The following Scholarships were awarded on April 20, 2022.  Congratulations to all of our winners:

Phyllis Jackson Memorial Endowed Scholarship: $5,000 (total amount awarded)

  • Honors the memory of CSULB journalism professor Phyllis Jackson.
  • Current recipients: Vittina Ibanez, Rachel Livinal, Kaitlyn Rowell

Michael and Julie Anastasi Scholarship: $1,000

  • Given by the Anastasis to support a journalism student returning to college.
  • Current recipient: Mark Sovel

Bill Pearl Community Journalism Scholarship: $1,250

  • Awarded to a student with 2.5 or better GPA with a strong demonstrated interest in community journalism.
  • Current recipient: Coming Spring 2023

Edison Institute Endowed Scholarship ($800)

  • Given to a junior or senior continuing journalism student for outstanding work in the field.
  • Current recipient: Jonathan Bigall

Journalism Special Scholarship ($500)

  • Given to an outstanding continuing journalism student.
  • Current recipient: Coming Spring 2023

Steffes Journalism Endowed Scholarship ($500)

  • Honors the memory of CSULB photojournalism professor Robert A. Steffes by recognizing a student showing promise in photojournalism, photo editing or media design.
  • Current recipient: Coming Spring 2023

Journalism Endowed Scholarship ($700)

  • Given to an outstanding continuing journalism student.
  • Current recipient: Laila Freeman

Beach Charities Scholarship ($400)

  • Given to an outstanding junior or senior journalism student.
  • Current recipient: Coming Spring 2023

Gail Barfield Savitz Endowed Scholarship ($600)

  • Given to a continuing sophomore, junior or senior journalism student who has distinguished him- or herself in journalism and related coursework.
