2011 – Daily 49er Wins National SPJ Award

The Daily 49er’s story on ASI salaries and perks at Long Beach State and throughout the CSU system took home the national first-place award from the Society of Professional Journalists.

The story, CSULB student officials earn third highest pay in CSU”written by Alexandra Baird with help from Katrina Guevara, won the SPJ Mark of Excellence regional award April 30, and advanced to the national contest, where it won the top prize. Results from the national competition were announced last weekend.

All first place winners will be recognized at the Excellence in Journalism 2011 conference Sept. 25-27 in New Orleans.

Several reporters helped collect data on ASI student salaries in fall 2010 under the direction of Baird and then-editor Brian Cuaron.

“This story was a team effort led by an ambitious editorial staff,” Baird said. “We spent weeks digging through data and making dozens of phone calls … to shine light on issues that matter to our readers– the students.”
