International Visiting Scholars

Fall 2014

Dr. Ji Young Nam is Director of the Lifelong Education Center and
Professor in the Dept. of Consilience at Korea Polytechnic University. Her research interests include applied linguistics, English listening comprehension and use of schematic knowledge and culture, first and second language acquisition, phonological structure and pronunciation, bilingualism, classroom research, teaching vocabulary, curriculum and instruction, teaching English to young learners and educational technology.

Spring 2014

Dr. James Costa is a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Oslo. He is working on issues of minority language standardization in Scotland, with a particular emphasis on the Shetland Isles. During his visit to CSULB, Dr. Costa worked with Dr. Jaffe to put together a panel for the 2014 American Anthropological Association meeting on Language and Place. They are coauthoring an article comparing issues of language, place and standardization in Corsica and Shetland.

Fall 2013

Dr. Ekaterina Lunkova (chair of Russian language, Smolensk State University) is visiting the Department of Linguistics from August 2013 to January 2014. Dr. Lunkova is supported by a Fulbright fellowship for curricular development. Her interests include corpus linguistics, computational linguistics, and Russian dialectology. She is working on creating a lexical database of the Smolensk dialect.

Fall 2012

Dr. Yingrui Gong (Associate Professor, School of Foreign Studies, Qingdao University, China) visited the Department of Linguistics at CSULB for a whole semester in Fall 2012. She presented her research titled “A Cognitive Stylistic Approach to Mind Style in Biblical Narrative: Metaphor and Characterization in the Story of Ahitophel and Hushai” at a Linguistics Department colloquium on Wednesday, November 14, 2012.

Fall 2011 – Spring 2012

Dr. Lei Jiang (Associate Professor, College of Foreign Studies, Northeastern University, China) visited the Department of Linguistics at CSULB for two semesters in Fall 2011 and Spring 2012. She presented her research titled “Reading-to-Write Assessment in College English Classes in China” at a Linguistics Department colloquium on February 29, 2012.

Spring 2010 – Fall 2010

Associate Professor Ping Liu from the College English Section, Huazhong Agricultural University, Wuhan, China, visited the Department of Linguistics at CSULB for two semesters in 2010. She presented her collaborative research titled “Functional Analysis of Science Texts for Bilingual Courses in Chinese Universities” at a Linguistics Department colloquium on November 23, 2010.

Fall 2008

Associate Professor Jun Li, Vice Chair of the Department of College English, College of Foreign Languages, China Three Gorges University, visited the Department of Linguistics at CSULB during the four months in the Fall semester of 2008. Professor Li presented her collaborative research titled “Bilingual Instruction in Chinese Universities: Multiple Reflection Discourses” at the linguistics department colloquium on February 18, 2009.

Fall 2007 – Spring 2008

Drs. Zhishan Wu and Yong Fu, two visiting scholars from Beijing Language and Culture University in China, worked on their doctoral research in the Department of Linguistics at CSULB during the 2007-2008 academic year.

Fall 2006

Drs. Qiang Liu and Dan Liu from Beijing Language and Culture University, China visited the Department of Linguistics at CSULB in the fall semester of 2006. Professor Qiang Liu gave a presentation titled “the Dynamic Study of Presupposition” based on his doctoral dissertation at the Linguistics Department Colloquium on Friday, December the 1, 2006.

Fall 2005

Drs. Li Zhang and Lieying Jia from Beijing Language and Culture University visited the Department of Linguistics as international visiting scholars during the four months in the fall semester of 2005. Dr. Zhang presented his doctoral research on “Oral Business Chinese – Analysis of Sales Talk” at the Linguistics Student-Faculty Colloquium on December 8, 2005.

Fall 2004

Drs. Ping Wu and Yuguo Han from Beijing Language and Culture University in China visited the Department of Linguistics as international scholars during the four months in the fall semester of 2004. They presented their doctoral research at the International Brown Bag Lunch co-sponsored by the Center for International Education, Phi Beta Delta International Honor Society, and the Department of Linguistics on Wednesday, December 8, 2004. Dr. Wu’s paper was titled “Formal Analysis of Natural languages.” Dr. Han’s paper was titled “The Interface between Syntax and Semantics of Mandarin Chinese.”

Fall 2001 – Spring 2002

Dr. Dongming Yu from Zhejiang University in China was an international visiting scholar with the Department of Linguistics for four months between November 2001 and February 2002. Dr. Yu presented his research titled “Pragmatics and the Study of Drama Texts” at the Linguistics Department Colloquium on January 30, 2002.
