Apply to be a PRO Guide

Now Accepting Applications

for the Fall 2024 – Spring 2025

Cohort of PRO Guides.

Application deadline is:

Wednesday, April 24, 2024, at 11:30 PM.

See application process below.

A select group of Psychology majors will be trained as PRO Guides to greet and orient new majors and minors and to provide general information to Psychology students about department requirements, student organizations, careers, graduate study and other psychology opportunities.

What do PRO Guides do?

The Psychology Resource Office (PRO) provide resources for psychology majors to explore and plan for their professional “lives after graduation,” whether that be a career or graduate school. Our most important resource are the PRO Guides themselves, who are psychology majors trained as career and graduate school “experts.”

PRO Guides take PSY 406, earning credit toward their own degrees, as they grow their professional skill set (e.g., mentoring, public speaking, leadership, teamwork). And, as a PRO, you can explore and plan for your own future while assisting your fellow majors with planning their future success!

The primary duties of PRO Guides:

  1. Hold 4 – 5 weekly office hours. You will staff the PRO office itself, assisting our clients (the psychology majors) with their needs. Hours are set during training (to fit within your class schedule) and remain consistent throughout the semester.
  2. Work on a team. PRO Guides work in groups to support PRO’s regular offerings. Group projects include: coordinating informational workshops and email blasts, conducting major project workshops for PSY 301; event planning and fundraising for PRO; being course assistants for PSY 301; managing the PRO office; researching PRO usage and client experience.
  3. Attend one weekly class meeting Wednesdays 12:30 to 1:45 PM. Class is essentially a “team meeting” where we plan and coordinate PRO business.
  4. Improve PRO, by contributing to the upkeep or enhancement of PRO (e.g., updating one of our binders, creating a new bulletin board or informational handout).

Prerequisites:

  • Guides must be psychology majors, but may apply while still pre-majors.
  • All applicants must have completed PSY 220 by the end of the semester in which they apply and have completed or be enrolled in PSY 301 for the current semester.
  • Overall GPA of at least 2.75; Psychology GPA of at least 3.0.
  • Two recommendation forms attesting to the reliability and responsibility of the applicant, at least one from a CSULB faculty member.
  • Ease in interacting with peers, good communication skills, and public speaking abilities.
  • Availability one week prior to the beginning of the upcoming semester.
  • Two semester commitment

Format:

  • Guides must attend class for 1 1/2 hours a week on Wednesdays (12:30 to 1:45) and be available an additional five hours each week for advising (hours to be arranged). In addition, each guide will undertake an educational project that averages two to three hours a week.

Benefits of Working as a PRO Guide:

  • Make friends! Have a mentor! Become involved and take a leadership role in the psych department! Work closely with fellow majors and faculty.
  • Earn six units toward your Psych degree! PRO Guides take PSY 406A and 406B. One semester counts as one of your 400-level required classes in the major, the other as a PSY upper-division elective.
  • Be a mentor! As a PRO Guide, you help psych majors answer questions about career possibilities, graduate school choices, and so much more. You become a “resident expert” in finding careers for those with psych BAs and how to apply to graduate school – valuable information you can apply to your OWN future, too.
  • Practice Professional Skills! PRO Guides obtain training and experience in many skills highly sought by graduate schools and employers – leadership, teamwork, public speaking, peer mentoring, and so much more.
  • Build that graduate school or job application! PRO Guides can earn great letters of recommendation from PRO faculty supervisors.
