Leadership Style and Job Satisfaction of Bank Tellers

Tellers’ job dissatisfaction is among the many problems facing the banking industry today. Due to the structured nature of tellers’ jobs, it is important to examine the effect of leadership style on tellers’ job satisfaction. Additionally, we also need to understand the effect of situational variables in this relationship. The following variables were examined in this study: leadership style and job tenure.
The sample consisted of 80 bank tellers in the Los Angeles area. The tellers completed the Leader Behavior Description Questionnaire Form XII, the job in general subscale of the Job Descriptive Index, a demographic questionnaire and an informed consent form.
Job tenure proved to have a significant effect on the relationship between teller job satisfaction and reported supervisor behavior. Further studies would show why high-tenure tellers preferred a supervisor high on initiation of structure and low-tenure tellers preferred one that is high on consideration.
