Armenian Cultural Values as Determined by Hofstede’s Cultural Values Survey
Following an extensive study during the 1960s and 1970s, in 1980 Hofstede proposed a theory of culture based on four variables labeled Power Distance, Uncertainty Avoidance, Individualism, and Masculinity. Utilizing a large international sample, Hofstede determined that cultures displayed marked variance on each variable.
This study was designed to establish normative references for Armenians on Hofstede’s variables. Once scores had been determined for Armenians in Armenia, their scores were compared to diasporan populations in the United States and Canada to determine if significant differences existed between Armenians in different geographic regions on each variable.
The results indicated a significant difference existed between Hofstede’s overall norms on Uncertainty Avoidance and Masculinity but not on the remaining two variables. A significant difference was also found to exist between Armenians in Armenia and Armenians in the diaspora on Hofstede’s Masculinity variable, although not on the remaining three variables.
