CONSENT TO PARTICIPATE IN RESEARCH
For Faculty Research Lab Mentors
You are being invited to take part in a research study conducted by Dr. Dustin Thoman, an Assistant Professor in the Psychology Department, California State University, Long Beach. It is important for you to understand why the research is being done and what it will involve. Please read the following information carefully, and if anything is unclear or you would like more information, please contact us. Take time to decide whether or not you volunteer to take part in this research study. Participation in this study is voluntary. You can choose not to take part in the study.
PURPOSE OF THE STUDY:
Our purpose is to examine the relationship among students Research Assistants’ everyday experiences, perceptions of research, and future career motivations. We will use this information to determine how certain kinds of lab-related experiences may influence students’ motivation and performance in their field of study.
PROCEDURES:
To help us with our study, we ask you to complete one questionnaire now and a follow-up questionnaire each semester about your research lab and undergraduate student Research Assistants (RAs). In these questionnaires, you will be asked to describe your research and daily lab tasks, including typically RA duties for each RA. You may of course decline to answer any questions that you find objectionable. Each questionnaire will take approximately 10-15 minutes to complete.
There are no alternative procedures for participation in this study.
COSTS AND COMPENSATION:
There are no costs to you for participating, other than your time and effort. We will compensate faculty participants for their time in this study by giving you $250 each semester for lab materials.
POTENTIAL RISKS/DISCOMFORTS AND BENEFITS:
We do not believe there are any serious risks associated with participation in this study. However, you will complete several questionnaires, so you might become frustrated, bored, or fatigued. If you become tired or fatigued, breaks will be given when requested. Also, some of the questions could potentially be perceived as personal and sensitive. If any of the questions makes you uncomfortable, you may omit responding to them. In addition, when providing identifying information (such as CSULB ID numbers) there is potential for breach of confidentiality. Furthermore, you may also withdraw from the study at any time without penalty. Benefits associated with your participation include adding to the scientific literature on understanding the factors involved in promoting interest in research careers.
CONFIDENTIALITY:
We are asking you for your name and faculty ID because we will later need to match your reports of RAs and your lab at each time point. We will take steps to ensure that your responses in this study are strictly confidential. Although we will need your name and faculty ID initially in order to link together the different sources of data, as soon as you begin participation you will be given a generic study participant ID number. When you submit any information (e.g. a survey) your name and ID will be removed from those data in our data file, and will be replaced with your generic participant ID number. In addition, any original data with your faculty ID number will be kept in a locked file cabinet with a locked laboratory in the Psychology Building, and only the Principal Investigator will have access to the password-protected file that matches actual ID number and generic participant ID number. Any information that you provide will be used solely for research purposes.
IDENTIFICATION OF INVESTIGATOR:
If you have any questions or concerns about the research, please contact Dr. Dustin Thoman at dthoman@csulb.edu
