Welcome our new Assistant Professor of Spanish, Dr. Jeannette Acevedo Rivera!

A native Puerto Rican, Jeannette Acevedo Rivera did her undergraduate and master’s degrees in Comparative Literature at the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras campus. In July 2014, she finished her PhD in Romance Studies at Duke University, with a specialization in French and Spanish nineteenth-century literature. Jeannette’s research and teaching focus on the representation of the female subject in literature, and on the intersection of gender, material culture, collection, and social networks. Similar to her own approach to scholarship, Jeannette fosters in her students the ability to establish links between course material and their personal concerns and investments. Her personal and professional experiences have made Jeannette aware of the importance to value and promote linguistic, ethnic, gender, and racial diversity, and she works towards that goal both within and outside the classroom. Jeannette is excited to join the academic community of Cal State, Long Beach, and looks forward to working with students and colleagues in the Department of Romance, German, Russian Languages and Literatures.

When she is not too busy thinking/teaching/conversing about literature and women, Jeannette likes doing yoga or pilates, watching (independent!) films, and traveling.
