Women and Images: Literary and Visual Representations of Women in the Context of the Armed Conflict in Peru

Please join us on Monday, March 16th at 4pm for a Book Presentation and Q/A Session with Peruvian author, Claudia Salazar Jimenez. Her novel, La sangre de la aurora (Bloody Dawn) was recently awarded the “Premio de las Americas”. The novel is an exploration of the role of women in Peru during the insurrection of the guerrilla group known as the Sendero Luminoso (Shinning Path) in the 1980s. Three fragmented stories – a lesbian photographer from Lima,  a terrorist teacher, and a peasant from Ayacucho– are interwoven to recreate a heartbreaking episode in Peru’s history. Nonetheless, this novel goes beyond the themes of violence, war, and terror. Salazar brings into play the displaced female body, the fragmented discourse, and the visual representations of women, which allows her female voices to recount past events that are not only part of Peru’s history but also part of human existence.
