In his review for the American Quarterly, Dr. Osuna examines four books on policing, counterinsurgency, and racial capitalism. The review highlights books that expose how counterinsurgency through everyday policing has generated rebellions as well as reactionary responses by capital to contain them.

About the National Organizers:

The principal organizers of the event include Arshad I. Ali, Assistant Professor of Educational Research at George Washington University; Maryam Kashani, Assistant Professor of Gender and Women’s Studies and Asian American Studies at the University of Illinois; and Shirin Vossoughi, Assistant Professor of Learning Sciences at Northwestern University. They work individually and collectively in the study and development of educational settings for youth from Muslim, migrant, immigrant, and diasporic backgrounds, with particular emphases on issues of race, gender, and social justice. Although this teach-in is primarily virtual (via Google hangouts), we encourage educators to participate with their classes, organize viewings, and host dialogue sessions in their schools or on their campuses.

Following this event, Dr. Sabrina Alimahomed will facilitate a follow up discussion with CSULB faculty, students, and staff.

MAPS Event on Privilege and Elites with Dr. Shamus Khan

The MAPS program recently organized a successful event on wealth, power, and privilege. The event featured a live video chat with Dr. Shamus Khan (Columbia University). We would like to thank Dr. Khan for the stimulating conversation and for sharing his excellent book: Privilege: The Making of an Adolescent Elite at St. Paul’s School, with sociology students here at CSULB!

MAPS Event on Undocuactivism with Dr. Joanna Perez

Dr. Joanna Perez (Assistant Professor of Sociology at CSUDH) presented her excellent work on Latina/o undocumented activism to a packed room of students. Her talk was called: “Undocumented and Powerful: Undocuactivists Creating Social Change.” The MAPS event was co-sponsored by Chicano and Latino Studies, the College of Liberal Arts, Sociology, and the Dream Success Center.
