Student Highlights

The students of the Department of Sociology have several accolades:

  • Since 2011 the department has enrolled an average of 775 full-time equivalent students each semester, representing approximately 10% of CLA enrollment and graduated approximately 700 students.
  • Students have participated in over 200 internships over the past three years alone including the American Red Cross, Planned Parenthood, Dramatic Results, Miller Children’s Hospital, CARE Program, Sierra Club, CHIRLA, Make a Wish Foundation, LAANE, the O.C. Chapter of the United Nations, as well as numerous schools, police/probation departments and youth programs throughout local communities.
  • Sociology graduates have been admitted to a number of diverse M.A., Ph.D. and professional programs including: social work, public policy & administration, urban and regional planning, teacher education, school counseling, nursing, law, demographic and social analysis, sexuality studies and geography.
  • Sociology Undergraduate students have recently received numerous research and service awards including McNair scholarships, the College of Liberal Arts – Outstanding Baccalaureate Award (2012-13), the Outstanding Sociology Undergraduate Award from the California Sociological Association (2013), the Sally Casanova Pre-Doctoral Scholarship, the Association for Applied and Clinical Sociology Student Project Award (2013), the CSULB President’s Scholars Leadership Award 2013, the CSULB Community Service Award (2010-11 and 2011-12), the University of Michigan’s Public Policy and International Affairs Fellowship Award for the Junior Summer Institute (2013 and 2014) and the SAS Global Forum Student Scholarship Award (2014).
