Rethinking Environmental Activism’s Reputation for Doom & Gloom
Dr. Nicole Seymour, Department of English, CSU Fullerton
Dr. Teresa Shewry, Department of English, UC Santa Barbara
A Scholarly Intersections Lecture & Moderated Discussion
Dr. Nicole Seymour will present work from her new book, Bad Environmentalism: Irony and Irreverence in the Ecological Age (University of Minnesota Press). Surveying stand-up comedy to TV, the lecture will highlight how a recent wave of environmental artists and activists reject the affects historically associated with environmentalism–including guilt,“gloom and doom,” sanctimony, self-righteousness, reverence, and sentimentality –and instead embrace modes such as irony, irreverence, glee, absurdity, perversity, and playfulness. Dr.Teresa Shewry will provide commentary and moderate the discussion.
