If you are able to arrive early or to stay after the program ends, Long Beach is an exciting city with many opportunites for culture and recreation. Long Beach was first incorporated in 1888. It lies 22 miles south of downtown Los Angeles. Now a city of nearly half a million residents, it boasts widespread ethnic and linguistic diversity. Long Beach Harbor is the largest container port in the United States.

The historic downtown and waterfront marina are very walkable. There are more than 100 restaurants within an eight-block area.The Queen Mary, the largest, fastest, most luxurious ocean liner of her time, entertains passengers in fine restaurants and on historical tours and the Aquarium of the Pacific featuring more than 12,500 inhabitants of the Pacific Ocean, undersea galleries and live shows. Long Beach is also home to several eclectic museums including the Long Beach Museum of Art and the Museum of Latin American Art.

Long Beach Airport is the most convenient center for air travel into the Los Angeles/Orange County area. Offering several daily flights on Alaska Air, Delta, JetBlue Airways and US Airways, Long Beach airport is the “plane” easy way to travel. When booking your travel into Long Beach Airport, use airport code “LGB.” Alternative area airports include bustling Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and Orange County’s John Wayne Airport (SNA). These airports offer hundreds of flights into and out of the area and are only a quick 25 minutes from Long Beach.
