Who We Are

The History Project at CSULB & DH builds partnerships between educators and scholars using research, theory, knowledge of the discipline, and best practices to deepen the quality of K12-university instruction in history-social science in the southern Los Angeles region. Education scholars offer knowledge about research and theory in discipline-based pedagogy. University historians and scholars from related disciplines provide expertise in history content, historiography, and historical practice. Classroom teachers contribute understanding of best practices in history instruction. Together these partners seek to employ inquiry approaches to learning, regularly assess student understanding, create cognitive tools to support student learning, and reflect on their own instructional practices to improve history-social science education at all levels.


Image of Dave Neumann

Dave Neumann is Site Director of The History Project. Formerly an award-winning high school history teacher for 11 years, Dave taught US History, World History, AP US History, AP World History, Geography, and English. As an adjunct faculty member at CSULB, he worked with pre-service elementary and secondary teachers for over eight years. Dave has organized numerous one-day and week-long workshops for teachers at all grade levels. Workshops address reading and writing skills, historical thinking, and various topics in American and World History. He has published many articles in education journals and presented at dozens of conferences and workshops. He has written test items for Advanced Placement World History, the Praxis World History Exam, and the SAT World History Subject Test Study Guide. He co-authored the Tenth-Grade Course Description for the California Department of Education’s Framework for History-Social Science and wrote a student guide to historical thinking for Bedford-St. Martins. Image of Tim KeirnTim Keirn is Faculty Advisor of The History Project. He holds a joint appointment in the Department of History and the College of Education. He is also Coordinator of the History-Social Science Credential Program, the largest in California. Tim has served as Principal Investigator or Project Director on grants pertaining to history education from the U.S. Department of Education, the California Postsecondary Education Commission, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Ahmanson, Freeman and Hewlett Foundations. He has presented workshops and served as a consultant on history education in Cambodia, India, Nepal, Qatar and Russia. Tim is actively involved in the AP history program and is currently the Senior Reviewer for the College Board national audit program in World History.


Image of Anthony Arzate

Anthony Arzate is Teacher Leader for The History Project. He has taught world history at Wilson High School, a large, diverse campus in Long Beach, for seven years. In that position, he has helped over one thousand students succeed in the AP World History course and exam. He was awarded the Sar Desai Prize for best lesson on India and has been featured on the site, “Ask a Master Teacher.” A regular workshop presenter, he has also helped to organize the Sites of Encounter in World History summer institute and the India Book Club. Anthony is currently developing curriculum for two world history websites, including World History For Us All, a project of San Diego State University in cooperation with the National Center for History in the Schools at UCLA.
