Professional Organizations


The American Historical Association (AHA) is a nonprofit membership organization founded in 1884 and incorporated by Congress in 1889 for the promotion of historical  studies. The AHA provides leadership for the profession, protects academic freedom, develops professional standards, aids in the pursuit and publication of scholarship, and supplies various services to sustain and enhance the work of its members. The association’s principal functions fall within four realms: publication, teaching, advocacy, and networking. As the largest historical society in the United States, the AHA serves historians representing every historical period and geographical area.


The California Council for History Education (CCHE) is the California affiliate of the National Council for History Education. The CCHE was established in 2005 to advance the study and teaching of history in schools throughout California; provide a program of professional activities for history educators in California; and promote professional interaction among history educators in California.


California Council for the Social Studies (CCSS) is a non-profit professional organization serving both public and private school educators, and is the leading voice for quality social studies education in California. CCSS promotes and supports social studies education through service, advocacy and leadership development. We are collectively committed to the strengthening and teaching of the social studies discipline though professional development, public awareness and collaboration at local, state and national levels.


The California World History Association (CWHA) is an organization dedicated to researching, writing, and teaching history from a global perspective. CWHA seeks to provide a forum in which scholars, teachers, and the general public can explore human history beyond the limitations of nations and states. We encourage the interaction between those researching world history and those teaching the subject in secondary, post-secondary, and graduate settings. CWHA is an affiliate chapter of the World History Association.

The National Council for History Education (NCHE) builds bridges between K-12 teachers, college and university faculty and museums/libraries/historical societies who all share a common passion for teaching history. Here you will find outstanding professional development opportunities, access to a wide range of historical organizations, thought-provoking annual conferences, free publications, and information on critical national and local educational issues. Most of all, you will be part of an international community linked together by a common commitment to excellence in history.


Founded in 1921, National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) has grown to be the largest association in the country devoted solely to social studies education. NCSS engages and supports educators in strengthening and advocating social studies. With members in all the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and 69 foreign countries, NCSS serves as an umbrella organization for elementary, secondary, and college teachers of history, civics, geography, economics, political science, sociology, psychology, anthropology, and law-related education. Organized into a network of more than 110 affiliated state, local, and regional councils and associated groups, the NCSS membership represents K-12 classroom teachers, college and university faculty members, curriculum designers and specialists, social studies supervisors, and leaders in the various disciplines that constitute the social studies.


Founded in 1907, the Organization of American Historians (OAH) is the largest professional society dedicated to the teaching and study of American history. The mission of the organization is to promote excellence in the scholarship, teaching, and presentation of American history, and to encourage wide discussion of historical questions and equitable treatment of all practitioners of history. The OAH is supported through the contributions of its membership, income from the annual meeting, and the support of Indiana University. The OAH represents more than 7,800 historians working in the U.S. and abroad. Our members include college and university professors, precollegiate teachers, archivists, museum curators, public historians, students, and a variety of scholars employed in government and the private sector.


The World History Association (WHA) is the foremost organization for the promotion of world history through the encouragement of teaching, research, and publication. It was founded in 1982 by a group of teachers and academics determined to address the needs and interests of what was then a newly emerging historical sub-discipline and teaching field. Since then, the WHA has grown four-fold, has garnered accolades for its award winning Journal of World History, and has played a seminal role in shaping the field in the U.S. and around the world. Important for American secondary education, WHA members have been instrumental in establishing standards for World History teaching at the national and state levels as well as designing the AP World History course. At present, although its membership is still predominantly North American, the WHA is represented in over 35 countries and has an affiliate relationship with world history societies in Europe and Australia.
